In 1822, the first espresso machine was made in France. In 1933, Dr. Ernest Illy invented the first automatic espresso machine. However, the modern-day espresso machine was created by Italian Achilles Gaggia in 1946. Gaggia invented a high pressure espresso machine by using a spring powered lever system. The first pump driven espresso machine was produced in 1960 by the Faema company. Most of the drinks today in our cafes are based on the Italian language.

ESPRESSO
Refers to both the “style of brewing” and the actual drink, also known as a “short black”. Single shot of espresso 30ml, served in a demitasse, may be served with small jug hot water.

LONG BLACK
Double or single shot of espresso, with a jug of fresh hot water. Usually served in a “tulip”.

AMERICANO
A cup of coffee to represent a plunger / filter / instant style of beverage. A single or double shot floated on top of hot water, served in a flat white cup maybe with cold milk on side.

CAPPUCCINO
Single or double shot of espresso, finished with hot foamed milk, dusted with chocolate or cinnamon. Should be presented as a mallowy dome, displaying golden crema around outside edge. The name “cappuccino” is derived from the colour of the robes of “Capuchin” monks in Italy.

FLAT WHITE
Single or double shot of espresso finished with steamed, ultra fine foamed milk.

CAFFE LATTE
Double shot of espresso, finished with steamed milk. Similar to Flat White, only served in a larger vessel. Name: “caffe” meaning coffee, and “latte” meaning milk.

CAFFE MOCHA
Shot of espresso blended with chocolate syrup, and finished as for a Cappuccino. Name: “Mocha” comes from a Yemeni coffee, Arabian Mocha one of the oldest coffees in the world, which displays chocolatey characteristics.

MACCHIATO
Served as a long or short espresso,  marked with small amount hot milk. Name: “Macchiato” means to mark or stain, hence the coffee is stained with a small amount of milk.

AFFOGATO
Name means to “choke” or “drown” and is made with a ball of ice cream in a short glass, with a double shot of espresso poured over it. (ie. Drowning)

RISTRETTO
A single espresso, “restricted” to a short pour of only 15 mls. Very intense flavour.
